Education Washroom Refurbishment Across Bristol Schools

Bristol, England

Bristol has experienced significant population growth in recent years, driving the city council to invest heavily in education infrastructure. As part of a long-term programme of education washroom refurbishment, multiple primary schools across the city have been upgraded or newly built in partnership with main contractor Skanska.

Skanska Construction

Across these washroom projects, TBS Amwell supplied Department for Education compliant toilet cubicles and vanity systems designed specifically for high-traffic school washrooms. Installations have been delivered across several sites, including May Park Primary School and Ashton Gate Primary School, supporting modern, durable and child-friendly school toilets.

Client’s Brief – Education Washroom Refurbishment

The contractor Skanska required a consistent, high-performance education washroom solution suitable for a range of primary school toilets across multiple projects within the Bristol schools programme.

Key requirements included:

  • A durable system capable of withstanding heavy daily use in busy school washrooms
  • Full compliance with Department for Education compliant specifications
  • Flexible configurations to support both standard and full-height cubicle layouts
  • Increased privacy options, including provisions for unisex toilet facilities
  • A coordinated aesthetic across cubicles and vanity units throughout each school

The priority was to deliver reliable, long-lasting education washrooms that could support pupils from nursery age through to Year 6.

Project Outcome | The School Washroom Refurbishments

May Park Primary School – Eastville, Bristol

May Park Primary School expanded from a two-form entry to a four-form entry school, now educating approximately 870 pupils from Nursery through to Year 6.

For their education washroom refurbishment, the school selected a mix of full-height and standard height Splash cubicles to balance privacy and accessibility.

  • Colour scheme: Plum and Linen
  • Coordinated SGL vanity units for visual consistency
  • Design to create a warm, modern and child-friendly school toilet environment

The result is a cohesive and durable primary school toilet installation that supports high daily usage while maintaining a welcoming aesthetic.

Ashton Gate Primary School – Southville, Bristol

Ashton Gate Primary School is a newly established school created through the transformation of a historic industrial office building originally constructed in 1915. The school now accommodates around 420 pupils.

For this school washroom project, a more varied colour approach was adopted to differentiate areas across the building:

  • Boys’ toilets: Petrol and Charcoal
  • Girls’ toilets: Thistle and Charcoal
  • Mixed Gender toilets: Spring and Eden
  • Matching vanity colours across all washroom zones

This approach ensured each school toilet areas had its own identity while maintaining overall design consistency and durability.

Outcome – Durable, Compliant and Long-Lasting School Washrooms

These Bristol projects demonstrate how well-planned education washroom refurbishments can deliver high-quality, Department for Education compliant facilities that meet the demands of modern education environments.

Working in partnership with Skanska, we supplied reliable washroom systems that continue to perform in busy school washrooms, supporting both functionality and design consistency across multiple sites.
