King Edmund School in Rochford has successfully completed the first phase of its major redevelopment programme, marked by the official opening of the new main school building on 30 January by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Delivered within a live environment, the secondary school washroom project required a coordinated approach and carefully specified materials suitable for long-term educational use.

Education Washroom Refurbishment
TBS Amwell supplied a fully integrated education washroom package for the student and staff facilities, working closely with the contractor Kier Group and our in-house installation partners TBS Fabrications, to ensure a washroom design suitable for long-term educational use, and compliance with the Department for Education (DfE) standards.
Operating in an active school environment imposed strict programme and safeguarding constraints which TBS Amwell, TBS Fabrications and Kier worked together to overcome.
Minimising the overall lifecycle cost was a primary consideration. The specification therefore prioritised robust materials, reduced requirements for replacements and simplified routine maintenance without disrupting daily school life.
TBS Amwell supplied a coordinated Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) washroom system specifically engineered for high-traffic secondary school environments, due to its durable design, water and impact resistance. With a key focus on the clients brief, to supply tailored washroom products designed for privacy, accessibility and inclusivity.
Our Splash Education toilet cubicles were manufactured using 13mm Solid Grade Laminate, due to its structural strength and resistance to impact, moisture ingress and surface wear – key performance requirements for secondary school washrooms.
Safeguarding considerations were integrated into the design. The full height privacy cubicles are designed with a 5mm floor clearance to align with Department for Education guidance, providing maximum privacy with the aim to reduce bullying and anti-social behaviour.
Each cubicle door is fitted with an emergency key-release lock and lift-off capability, allowing staff to gain access quickly and safely, when necessary, while preventing unauthorised entry. The secondary school toilet cubicle system is suitable for education environments where both safety and discretion are essential.
To support the pressing deadline for completion and overall longevity, TBS Amwell supplied the Solid Grade Laminate IPS Panel system in matching Coastal Green for the WC areas and the separate accessible washroom.
The system is delivered with panels fixed to a pre-assembled steel frame, improving stability and making it 50% faster for TBS Fabrications to install, compared to traditional timber frame systems. Ensuring our school washroom installation team could complete the project on time and flawlessly. The construction of the IPS panel system ensured impressive impact and moisture resistance, and the integrated hinged access panels to allow for easy maintenance.
Vanity areas were also manufactured in Solid Grade Laminate to withstand the highest usage zones within the washrooms. The material provides solid core with a smooth, hygienic surface suitable for regular cleaning regimes, compared to chipboard core materials which risk delamination. The water-resistant construction supports long-term performance in high traffic school washroom environments and helps maintain hygiene standards.
Each vanity unit is supported by an integrated steel frame system, delivering additional structural rigidity and ensuring the installation meets the required deadline.
The consistent material palette across the cubicles, IPS system and vanities provides both visual continuity and a simplified maintenance approach for facilities teams.
The completed facilities provide King Edmund School with a durable, compliant and visually cohesive secondary school washroom environment designed for long-term performance within a high-traffic education setting. The consistent use of Solid Grade Laminate across cubicles, IPS panel systems and vanity units deliver strong resistance to impact and moisture while reducing maintenance intervention and associated lifecycle costs.
DfE-compliant safeguarding and accessibility features have been incorporated throughout, supporting safe daily operation for students and staff. The finished school washroom installation successfully integrates with the architectural finish of the new building, while ensuring reliable operation even at the busiest times of the school day.
