Terminal Security Washroom Refurbishment
As the works were carried out in a fully operational airport environment, careful planning, coordination and phased installation were essential to ensure passenger flow through the security area remained uninterrupted throughout the programme.
The client required a full washroom refurbishment of the existing facilities to deliver modern, durable, and low-maintenance commercial washrooms suitable for a high-traffic international airport environment.
The specification called for materials capable of withstanding constant heavy use while resisting moisture, impact and long-term wear. A clean, contemporary aesthetic was also essential to align with the wider airport terminals environment.
Equally important was the need for installation systems that could support rapid on-site assembly, helping contractors meet tight programme constraints while ensuring long-term ease of maintenance for facilities management teams.
Delivering a washroom refurbishment within a live airport security zone presented significant operational and logistical challenges. Passenger movement through the terminal had to continue without disruption, meaning all works required precise planning, controlled deliveries, and close coordination with airport operations.
TBS Amwell developed a fully coordinated washroom solution tailored specifically to the demands of a high-traffic airport environment. The approach focused on delivering durability, hygiene, and installation efficiency in equal measure.
By combining precision-engineered systems with robust, high-performance materials, the airport washroom solution was designed to withstand continuous use while significantly reducing installation time on site. This ensured that LPL Construction Services’ timetable could be maintained without compromising on quality, performance or finish.
The result was a cohesive, specification-led package that met the operational requirements of a live airport while providing long-term value for both the client facilities management teams.
The Minima toilet cubicle range formed a key part of the washroom installation, selected for its minimalist design, structural strength and suitability for high-traffic commercial washrooms. Manufactured in 13mm Solid Grade Laminate and finished in Stone and Salt laminates, the system delivers a modern aesthetic while ensuring long-term durability in demanding public environments.
Its water-resistant and impact-resistant construction makes it particularly well suited to an airport washroom, where reliability under constant use is essential. The inclusion of satin anodised aluminium hardware further enhanced performance, while the smooth, hard-wearing surfaces support thorough cleaning.
To complement the toilet cubicle system, the IPS PDQ Panel & Frame system was chosen to provide a robust and accessible solution for concealing services within the washroom environment. Manufactured in 13mm Solid Grade Laminate Stone and Salt finish and supported by a galvanised steel frame, the system delivers exceptional strength and stability. Its precision-engineered design ensures consistent alignment and a high-quality finish across all areas of the IPS panel installation.
A key advantage of the PDQ system is it significantly reduces installation time. Compared to traditional timber-framed IPS systems, installation is up to 50% faster, making it particularly effective in time-sensitive environments, as such as airport washroom refurbishments. Prefabricated fixing points and pre-formed components streamline on-site assembly, reducing time spent onsite while improving installation accuracy.
The PDQ Vanity Frame system with High Pressure Laminate access panels was also specified to deliver a fast, durable and efficient solution for the vanity areas. Supplied pre-assembled, the system allows for an installation that is 90% faster than traditional construction methods, significantly reducing on-site programme durations.
Engineered for strength and long-term performance, the frame is designed to withstand heavy daily use, while the HPL panels provide excellent resistance to moisture and surface wear, providing easy service access for the facility teams. Finished in matching Stone and Salt laminates, the vanity units integrate seamlessly with the overall design scheme. Their accessible construction also supports efficient maintenance, ensuring long-term operational efficiency within a busy airport setting.
The completed commercial washroom refurbishment at Stansted Terminal Security demonstrates TBS Amwell’s capability to deliver high-performance, specification-led washroom solutions within complex, live operational environments.
Through close collaboration with LPL Construction Services, the Terminal Security washrooms were successfully transformed into modern, durable facilities designed to withstand continuous passenger use while maintaining a consistent and contemporary aesthetic.
By combining robust material specifications with fast-track installation systems, the commercial washroom project achieved both efficient on-site delivery and long-term value for the client. The result is a cohesive, high-performance washroom environment that meets the demands of one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs while ensuring reliability, hygiene and ease of maintenance over its lifecycle.
